Spending just 24 hours in Mexico City, the second biggest city in the world, may seem impossible. There’s far too much to see, do, and take in for such a short duration. Even if your stay is this short, though, having a furnished apartment for rent in Mexico City at your disposal is a wonderful advantage. In this guide you’ll find some of the most enjoyable, iconic, and cultivating outings the city has to offer.
Start Early at the Centro Historico
Start your day with an early breakfast at Café El Popular in the Centro Historico. This round-the-clock eatery is a favorite among tourists and locals alike. Enjoy a generous helping of chilaquiles and wash it down with a fresh pot of coffee and get pumped for the adventurous day ahead.
If you’re more of a grab-and-go kind of person, then we recommend grabbing a guajolotas for the road from one of the many street vendors.
Swing by the Palacio de Bellas Artes
Spend your morning gazing at some of the city’s most impressive architecture at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts). Wind your way through Avenida Cinco de Mayo, passing the amazing Casa de Los Azulejos on the way, and you’ll soon find yourself in a mesmerizing art-filled landscape.
Walk Along the Paseo de la Reforma
Mosey down the Paseo de la Reforma towards the Bosque de Chapultepec and get a view of some of the city’s most significant landmarks, including the Diana la Cazadora and the Ángel de la Independencia.
If you’re too tired to walk, just take the metro to Chapultepec. You’ll find the journey takes far less time.
Have Lunch in the Plaza
Ride the train to Colonia Roma and spend the afternoon shopping in one of the many boutiques or viewing some of the city’s best contemporary art galleries. There’s several cafes to choose from, in addition to a boozy ice cream shop, Helado Obscuro.
Browse Books and Have a Cup of Coffee
You might be a little worn out by the time 5 p.m. comes around, so we recommend heading over to the Roma or Condesa branch of Cafebrería El Péndulo for an afternoon pick-me-up. Browse through the rows of books and have a much-needed cup of coffee as you skim.
Make Your Way Back to the Centro Historico for Happy Hour
With your energy levels back up, enjoy an affordable assortment of beer and cocktails at the Miralto bar. Bonus, you might get there in time to see the sun drop below Mexico City’s mountainous backdrop.
End the Day With a Fancy Dinner
If you’re not on a budget, then check out Mercado Roma for some fine dining. Or, if you are on a budget, then have a reasonable and delicious dinner at Café de Tacuba. After, and for those of you who have made it this far and still have a reserve of energy, there’s an amazing wine bar called Amaya that’s the perfect spot before a night of clubbing.
You’ll soon learn 24 hours is not nearly enough time in a city as rich with culture, good food, and amazing scenery as Mexico City. That being said, making the most of a short trip here can be easily accomplished by following our suggestions above. Think of this one day as just a teaser to a lifetime of trips to Mexico City.
